Lydia Loveless‘s excellent new album Somewhere Else is full of cleverly candid, cowpunk-scuffed heartland rock. Previous standouts making the online rounds include the straight-ahead gut-punch “Really Wanna See You,” the deadly jaunty “To Love Somebody” and the French-symbolist transportation “Verlaine Shot Rimbaud.” Oh yes, she also covered Ke$ha’s “Blind.” In a statement to Wondering Sound, Loveless says she wrote Somewhere Else‘s lovesick ballad “Hurts So Bad” “after reading a book about Liz Taylor and Richard Burton that kinda crushed me. The song pretty much fell in my lap. For the video, I told my stylist/friend Devan Ford that I wanted to look like sexy Jane Austen.”
Watch her perform the song live in a barber shop with bassist Ben Lamb and guitarist/vocalist Todd May below; former Black Swans drummer Keith Hanlon directed and mixed.
